Battlefield 2142 has two ways to get a roadkill. Knowing how it works and what counts as what, will help you along the way. So read carefully.

Drive them over

Well that's a no brainer. Simply line them up, and drive over them. You an technically do this with any vehicle. Like stomp on them with a walker, crush them with a tank or even park a flying vehicle on top of them. To make it extreme you can even drive over people in the snail like Goliath. But in general you want a fast moving vehicle. The FAV vehicles of both factions are the best choice for this. More about this below though.

Blow something up close to them

This is a bit tricky at first to understand. The game counts as a roadkill when a vehicle killed someone, other than with the normal weapons. There are two prime examples. Say you shoot at a walker with a pilum from below. It instantly catches fire but doesn't blow up. The crew abandons ship in the last moment, the walker explodes and kills them. That is counted as a roadkill, the game will say you killed them with the walker. Another very popular one is the air transport. Filled up to the rim with fuel i presume, they are flying bombs. If you blow them up, chances are one or two bystanders will be killed by the exploding transport and not by whatever weapon you used.

Again, the person has to be outside the vehicle, and be killed by the vehicles explosion to count as a road kill. This is something that happens more randomly and by pure chances though. So you are better off sticking with the first method. And by the way, ramming walkers with an air transport does not give you road kills.

Awards that need it

There are a small number of awards that need this particular kind of kills, so here they are listed that you can find easier what you might be looking for.

Please note that the last one is a Northern Strike Ribbon, so you cant get it in the other modes. There is a small section about it on the bottom.

Modes and Locations

By now you should realize that many maps are better suited for one thing or another. Road kills is very special. You want a few FAVs standing around (almost all maps have that thankfully), open stretches that you can zip through and in general a small map, with not may other vehicles, so you don't get lots of mines. I could explain to you in detail why the other maps and modes don't work well (i might add such a section to the guide) but in general, just take my word for it for now, test it and see for yourself. Instead i will tell you why this is the best method.

Play Conquest mode on Tunis Harbor. Make sure the map is 64 sized (two uncapables, and three Grey flags in between, on the southern side of the harbor). Secondly look that its not a server where 64 players are on, better 32 players, as then the rounds take a lot longer and you get to use the vehicles a lot more (less competition).

So start at any of the locations, grab a ride and zip for the center point of the map, cap it, then ignore the usual conquest game from here on out. That's right, ignore it. Getting enough road kills is hard sometimes. There are lucky rounds, where people just line up, but mostly it is very hard. Getting 5 road kills is relatively easy, getting 10 or even 12, is outright hard. If you don't concentrate on it, you wont get there. Also you might not make it in the first round, so just keep trying. If someone catches on and uses mines all the time, switch servers.

So now why is Tunis and conquest the best choice? In Tunis you only have two walkers and the FAVs. No tanks or other vehicles, means people use less mines. This makes your life easier. You still get blown to bits and shot out of the FAV once in a while, but it is in general a lot easier. If there are tanks or other vehicles, people use mines like crazy and you will never get there. Also Tunis is a small map, all is relatively close together. And of course the best about Tunis is, it has a few routes you can zip through very fast and easy and you can drive over people there as they walk around through open spaces (they have to, or it simply is faster to do so mostly). Sure there are a lot of hiding places, but the strategy comes a in the next part.

Strategy

Always start where an FAV is located at (spawn location). From here grab a ride, or wait for one to appear. On Tunis there are 3 FAVs on the starting location, so chances are pretty good you can grab a ride there. Do not wander off. Ignore all other things. If you stand there you might as well put down a create with ammo or healing supplies for your teammates. Maybe put up a sentry or something, but don't go and fight other players unless they come to you. Concentrate on getting into the vehicles.

Now how to drive. This might sound stupid but it is a lot harder than it looks. Normally, you want to get as fast from one location to another. This is about getting as fast through a location, as you can. Never stop, never hit something frontal, unless you are sure you can make a kill this way, use the booster in the last second of your approach to a victim. So just keep driving around, the map is basically big circles you can drive around in. There are two paths that get close to both original spawns and intersect twice at the middle spawn point. Don't go into the enemy base, keep driving on these circles. If you are safe, you could reverse and try the same course in the other direction to confuse your enemy. If you keep up a pattern, they will notice and kill you.

Don't try to drive over them when they are between or very close to a gap (concrete pillars, metal supports, etc). Chances are they are just out of reach and you end up stuck in front of then, and they have only to fire at you to kill you. If you have someone run away in the way you drive, push the boost and run them over. If they run to one side, steer ahead of them a bit, like where they would be if they had taken two more steps, and you will hit them with your bumper perfectly. If they gotten into cover, just drive past them and make another pass there later.

The key is to be persistent, never do anything else but drive around (don't change into the gunner seat) and never stop. If a walker appears, just drive past it or avoid that corner. Don't worry about dying a lot. If you keep to the strategy you should make enough road kills.

Northern Strike Ribbon

The special ribbon from northern strike requires you to do kills with the Speeder (PAC special vehicle). If you read the above part then you should see what is a very good strategy. Play PAC, always spawn where you can find a speeder, play only Assault Lines (never titan) and chose your map accordingly. Your best choice there is Liberation at Leipzig. Bridge at Remagen is too large, has to many vehicles and also not enough spaces for you to drive over your prey. The Port Bavaria, can work out, if the EU makes a good effort with a couple of basic spawn points, but mostly you will end up either driving off the edge or being killed by a walker. Liberation at Leipzig is a bit bad from all the rubble laying around, but strangely people do not use cover as good as they could. Also many of the flag locations are pretty open and allow you to run people over.

Try to do a diagonal hit. That is you press forward and to the side while steering with your mouse to the other side a bit. This way you have a larger area of attack. If they are straight ahead or laying you can hit em straight on, but mostly you have them moving around, so the diagonal one works best. Just sideways wont do, as you don't get enough speed that way mostly, unless you can crush them against a wall flatly, which is pretty seldom.

As an additional hint, the speeders are less robust than an FAV, so you might want to be engineer, and once in a while stand into a corner and repair it, for another pass. The Speeder will break a lot faster and with all the bumps in the map, you will get banged up badly fast.

Maps and modes to avoid

This is just why the other places don't work, so you don't need to read it if you are simply interested about getting to the road kills.

Titan maps are bad by definition. Too many vehicles, large distances between silos and mostly in the second part, when one or both shields are down, nothing for you to drive over anymore, as most will be on a titan attacking or defending. Whats left on the ground will sit in a vehicle or be close to one. So avoid those.

Conquest maps in general are a lot better. But there also you see a lot differences. Most of them are too big, again many vehicles (lots of mines too) and finding vehicles for yourself is a pain. Small ones like Cerebre landing, support one FAV on each side but driving them around is more lines than circles. You get stuck more often and chances in total are slim someone actually takes a path you can drive over them on. Camp Gibraltar is even worse than that, it only has FAVs on the side of the PAC and they basically can only get stuck between the third and second last spawn point.

Assault Lines is also a nightmare. The maps are just not made for this. Liberation at Leipzig is your best shot, but its a night map and your only real chance there is using a speeder. Great if you need speeder kills, but that's about it.

So do yourself a favor, and don't make those mistakes. It just is frustrating as hell when you get 9 kills by sheer luck after 40 minutes and then the time or tickets run out.
